EVENT BARN AT WOODSEDGE WINS NATIONAL CONTEST!
Each year, Morton Buildings Inc., a well known
national construction company with expertise in
building quality agricultural facilities submits
a handful of projects as entries in the National
Frame Builders Association’s yearly competition.
Builders from all over the United States submit
entries in numerous categories for this contest.
We were delighted to learn that our Star Events
Sale Arena and Event Center at WoodsEdge Wools
Farm was chosen as the winning entry in the Agricultural/Livestock
Category. According to Morton Buildings the uniqueness
& creativity of the building design &
overall appearance were the deciding factors in
the Judge’s choice.
2007 ANNUAL FARMER BUSINESSMAN’S
PICNIC TO BE HELD AT WOODSEDGE
The Hunterdon County Board of
Agriculture selects one farm each year
to host their annual Farmer Businessman’s
Picnic with 500 to 700 farmers
from the state of New Jersey in attendance,
as well as many of the state’s
politicians and dignitaries. The event
is used to showcase agriculture in the
Garden State and Hunterdon County
by holding the event at farms that
are known for innovation in their
respective field. This will be the first
time an alpaca and llama farm has
ever been chosen to host the event!
According to the Board members who
did the site selection, WoodsEdge has
a remarkable history of converting a
virtually unproductive piece of ground
into a profitable and sustainable agricultural
endeavor. They felt the event
barn, where the dinner will be held,
was the only one of its kind in the
county, winning this site the honor
of hosting the annual event due to its
unique and innovative characteristics.
The event is always held the last
Wednesday in July and historically
begins with two hours of farm tours. We
are already busy setting up educational
displays at each of the four major livestock
barns about breeding and raising
alpacas and suri llamas!
WOODSEDGE IS CHOSEN AS PRIME FARMLAND
FOR PRESERVATION!
The ink is now dry on the legal paperwork to preserve
WoodsEdge as a farm! The land will never be developed
residentially or commercially, but will remain,
for perpetuity, as farmland. Brent, as a third
generation New Jersey farmer, is indeed following
his heritage and creating a farm legacy for future
generations!
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA COLLABORATES
WITH WOODSEDGE ON NEW RESEARCH
WoodsEdge is pleased to announce their collaboration
with the Department of Clinical Studies at New
Bolton Center, School of Veterinary Medicine of
the University of Pennsylvania in a new research
project on clinical evaluation of pregnant hembra
alpacas. The School of Veterinary Medicine at
the University of Pennsylvania pioneered the studies
on clinical evaluation of pregnancy in mares,
and Drs. Leonardo Brito, Patricia Sertich, JoAnn
Slack and Lauren Greene would like to pioneer
the studies on clinical evaluation of pregnancy
in camelids. With camelids only producing one
cria per year, problems that arise during gestation
that may put the pregnancy at risk can have serious
economic impact to the breeder. In humans and
other domestic species, especially the horse,
there have been significant developments allowing
doctors to recognize problems and develop successful
treatment strategies for abnormal pregnancies,
thus increasing the likelihood of fetal survival.
With this research, Dr. Brito hopes to make that
information available to alpaca owners and their
veterinarians to maximize the number of live healthy
crias! Beginning in March, Dr. Brito and his team
of experts will be spending time at WoodsEdge
to monitor the pregnancy status of alpaca females.
Dr. Brito, B.Vet.Med., PhD, Diplomate American
College of Theriogenologists, is fairly new to
the University of Pennsylvania, arriving there
last September from The University of Saskatchewan
where one of his professors was Dr. Greg Adams.
Dr. Adams has done extensive research on reproductive
physiology in camelids, so Dr. Brito has had an
excellent mentor! Many of you may remember Greg
as Linda’s favorite co-commentator for the
1994 and 1998 AOBA Fashion Shows as well as at
WoodsEdge’s 1999 Sale of the Century. According
to Dr. Brito, one of the reasons the team from
the University of Pennsylvania chose WoodsEdge
was because of it’s 20 years of data collection
on camelid reproductive parameters, with 16 years
under the supervision of the renowned equine theriogenologist,
Dr. Dean Neely. Both Drs. Brito and Neely will
be speaking at the Spring Fling Alpaca Auction,
May 11–13, 2007 at WoodsEdge Wools Farm,
presenting information in their area of expertise
that is invaluable to the alpaca industry. Please
be sure to attend the Camaraderie Cocktails May
11, at the Spring
Fling Auction to meet Dr. Brito and learn
how you can help the cutting edge experts learn
more about alpacas!
