About Suri Llamas
 Centuries-old
drawings, art, and archaeological evidence from South America
support the existence of a rare breed of llama possessing
a high luster fleece which formed into an independent lock
style, known as suri. This highly treasured fiber was used
for the finest garments of Incan rulers. Today, throughout
the world, these rare suri llamas have once again become highly
prized and the object of preservation efforts.
Suri llamas have generated tremendous international
excitement. They are compelling, beautiful, and a delight
to own. Suri llamas possess a calm intelligence with individual
character and attachment to their caretakers. Their rarity
makes them an excellent livestock investment, reproducing
annually. Classified as domestic livestock, they are eligible
for depreciation over a 5 to 7 year period as well as the
tax benefits of a farming enterprise. Ideally suited for small
acreages, sustainable agriculture practices, and part-time
family based businesses, suri llamas are easy to care for
and gentle on the environment. They are shorn every year to
provide a high quality luxury fiber, comparable to cashmere
or vicuna.
Founded
in 2003, the Suri Llama Association and Registry is dedicated
to preserving and improving the Suri Llama Breed by maintaining
an authoritative breed standard and officiating the Keuring
process, which allows entrance into the SLA Registry. The
SLA membership is supported by the association through education,
breed promotion, and marketing assistance for both the suri
llama and its fiber.
Continued improvement of the suri llama breed through selective
breeding is made possible by utilizing the database established
and maintained by the Suri Llama Association & Registry.
Membership in the Suri Llama Association and participation
in the SLA Registry enables breeders to achieve a higher level
of success in their selection and mating of breeding stock.
Lasting investment and value to the Suri Llama Breed is attained
through this strong Breed Association and a thorough Keuring
process.
