ATTIRE:
Attire of exhibitors should be respectful, neat and clean.
HALTER AND LEAD:
Llamas are shown in hand on a clean well fitted halter and
lead.
FIBER REQUIREMENTS:
- The llama must be shown in as natural state as possible
— free of debris and dry.
(Exceptions will be made at keurings for wetting down of
legs in hot weather.)
- Nothing should be applied to the fiber to alter the natural
state before the keuring.
*Use of topical application will result in the llama being
excused from the day's keuring.
- Shearing is acceptable and strongly encouraged.
- A shorn llama must show a minimum of three inches of re-growth
of its fiber along the main blanket area. In the event of
a barrel cut, it will not be sufficient to have three inches
of fleece only on the neck, shoulders, and hips. You may
bring the fleece, but it is not required.
LLAMA:
- The llama should be lead trained to stand quietly for
fiber and hands on inspection.
- The suri llama is inspected from all sides.
- Conformation and movement are evaluated on a firm, flat
surface with ample space. The llama is then required to
walk out along the marked triangle away from and back to
the inspectors.
- The handler should walk the llama out in a straight line
in an unrestrictive manner as quickly as necessary to best
show proper movement.
- Exhibitors may have a second handler to assist for hands
on inspection.
- Inspectors may excuse unruly llamas whose actions threaten
or endanger anyone.
- Cruelty or abuse of a llama by anyone is forbidden at
SLA Keurings.
ON THE DAY OF THE KEURING
The llama is individually presented in its division to two
SLA approved Keuring Inspectors for an evaluation according
the SLA Breed Standards. The Inspectors will use the SLA Linear
Score Sheet to determine the scores in each category. Evaluations
will include height, fiber, conformation, movement and phenotype.
Major strengths, weaknesses, and general impressions will
be noted. Each llama may be inspected no more than twice per
calendar year, but only one keuring is required for entry
into the SLA registry. Owners may choose to enter more than
one keuring over the lifetime of a llama in order to attain
a higher score or status.
- Suri Fiber Inspection:
The llama must pass the minimum suri fiber inspection requirements
(must earn a minimum of 55 points on the SLA Linear Score
Sheet) to continue the keuring process.
- Height Inspection:
Llama's height at the withers is recorded.
- Conformation, Movement and Phenotype:
These characteristics will be inspected and scored once
the llama has passed the initial fiber inspection.
An oral assessment of your suri llama's strengths, weaknesses
and overall general impressions may be given by the Inspectors.
Questions from the exhibitors and spectators will be encouraged.
All Keuring assessments, scores and awards are recorded by
the Inspectors.
SLA awards are presented after each individual division scores
have been recorded.
Official Keuring results are posted on the SLA website and
filed in the Suri Llama Registry.
