SLA founders recognize that the suri llama
population in North America is comparatively small. They
have developed a two-part objective which allows for a flow
of new genetics into our registry.
Part 1
The SLA Breed Standards keeps the definition of suri as wide
as possible, while still being as restrictive as necessary
to achieve the goal of preserving and improving Suri Llamas.
The standard will be interpreted in a number of different
ways by different breeders, as they select the look of the
suri llama they intend to produce.
Part 2
Non-suri llamas that have produced at least one SLA Qualified
or Permanent Suri offspring may be eligible for the SLA Bloodstock
Registry. These llamas may attend a keuring and be inspected
only for conformation, height and movement and will be given
a Keuring score. These scores will be recorded in the SLA
Bloodstock Registry. A certificate will be issued for a fee.
The Bloodstock Registry offers the opportunity for new genetics
to be added into the SLA Suri Registry and helps to continually
upgrade the quality of suri llamas via the keuring process
for sires and dams. Future SLA awards and designations for
Bloodstock animals will be awarded solely on the llama's production
record.
